What is the Southwest Sustainable Forests Partnership?

The states of New Mexico and Arizona are transitioning into a new partnership that will be based upon the proven model, Four Corners Sustainable Forests Partnership, which helped create a strong connection between sustainable forests, sustainable communities, and sustainable industries. The States are committed to continuing their collaboration with the USDA Forest Service Region 3 by using Economic Action Programs as an instrument to initiate the Southwest Sustainable Forests Partnership (SWSFP).

Why do we need the Southwest Sustainable Forests Partnership?

SWSFP is developing sustainable community based enterprises capable of addressing the utilization of small diameter trees harvested from forest restoration and fire mitigation projects. These include, but are not limited to, projects that 1) use wood biomass as a renewable natural resource to provide clean, readily available energy suitable for use in heating or power systems for public schools, public facilities or commercial buildings or that 2) develop sustainable forest practices, markets and infrastructure in Arizona and New Mexico.

SWSFP executive committee contains equal representation from the states, tribes, local government, universities and the U.S. Forest Service. Representatives are self selected based on active involvement in the Partnership. Arizona and New Mexico residents are encouraged to collaborate with SWSFP Partners in pursuit of the SWSFP mission.

What are the goals of the Partnership?

  • Provide technical transfer opportunities that promote the science of healthy forest ecosystems and the acceptable practices for reducing hazardous forest fuels.
  • Provide business and marketing expertise opportunities for wood use to build sustainable forest and wood product enterprises.
  • Promote sustainable, community-based forest and wood product enterprises.
